Can't get anything to work

I bought the Hub 8 recently so I could start using all my old modules like my JV1080, Novation bass station, MR Rack etc but I cannot get a single thing to work using the dins on this. It is completely unintuitive with 6 in and 6 out (plus the 2 USB which I am not interested in) but there are 2 groups of 3 in the software configuration, surely 1 to 6 is a more useful approach like other midi interfaces. I followed the instructions for configuration but nothing works so I stripped it down to just the Hob 8, my mac and my M-audio Oxygen pro controller connected by nothing other than the midi din, and it is not detected. I can see the midi signal being sent as it light responds to note presses, but nothing gets back to my mac. It works fine with USB but no matter which din port I use I cannot play a note. Really don't like this unit at all. Maybe it's a dud or something? Oh, and I updated it to 3.12. What am I missing?
